Now that you have your Sims3 Custom Content project finished and archived into a neat ZIP or RAR little bundle, you will need to upload it somewhere for the world to enjoy. …After all that is the purpose of this tutorial, ya! Your sharing possibilities are only limited by your own imagination.

*smile*

To help you make an informed decision, I have comprised a list of free WebHosts where you can easily build your own Sims3 FanPages to host your new creations. One thing you should factor into your decision is whether or not you know how to build a WebPage either from scratch or by using a program such as Microsoft Word or FrontPage, or if you need a Wizard to do all the work for you.

If you have no WebPage building knowledge at all, then you will want to find a free WebHost that provides the user with a Builder’s Control Panel or Wizard, like Google or SnapPages. OR you could Join a Sims3 FanSite that hosts Custom Content for many creators, like the Sims3Fanatics Community YahooGroup or ModtheSims2.

If you are determined to own your own Sims3 Fanpage, and have no idea how to build a page, then a good host for you would be the Google Sites…because it has a builder built right into the control panel, and it’s easy to link your pages AND a big feature for those who want to share content, Google Sites have an attachment feature that will let you put your ZIPped/RARed up goodies directly on the pages…no linking and cross linking necessary…Easy Peasy, ya!!!

I should probably mention that all free hosts will likely have some kind of limits imposed on their users. Limits commonly involve file size and often bandwidth allowances. For this reason, many SimsFans host their WebPages on a free WebHost, such as Google Sites and AngelFire, while hotlinking a File Storage/Sharing service, such as RipWay or SkyDrive, to share their creations.

Take some time to explore your choices to make the best decision for your FanPages.

A List of Choices

Here are some possible free sites for building your FanPages.

Want to build your Own Sims3 FanPage? Try some of these free hosts.

I have not personally used them all. I have, however, used many of those listed. Most require ads on your site to keep the service free…some ads are very obtrusive and some are barely noticeable.

Currently, I am using Google because they sport less obtrusive ads to muddle up your FanPages.

If you would like to see my Sims sites built on some of these free hosts as an example before deciding what you would like to try, I have provided some convenient links here.

Free WebPage Hosts

·       Google

·       Christian.Net

·       SnapPages

·       AngelFire

·       0Catch.com

·       100WebSpace

·       F@teBack

·       Byethost

·       Free WebPage Hosts

·       250free.com

Val's Google Page

Google does not offer FTP access, but it does have a web builder that makes it easier for the less experienced web builders make their FanPages. It’s not the easiest control panel I have every played with, but with a little experimenting any Simmer will have no trouble getting a functional FanPage operational.

Another nice feature with Google is the file attachment function. This allows the owner to build his/her page and attach his/her custom content to the bottom of the pages. This means there is no need for a File Storage/Sharing host…unless you are running out of space. *smile*

Val's Christian.Net

This website is very clean and offers the FTP access that I like to use for uploading my pages. There are no forced ads anywhere that I have seen. This WebHost does NOT offer any kind of builder. If you are not able to build a website from scratch, then you might want to wait until you have more experience before trying this host.

Val's SnapPages

This is one of my newly discovered web hosts. It’s got some excellent new features, and it’s very appealing to the eye. It features an easy to follow control panel builder.

I have not played with it much, as I am still scoping out the best web hosts for my new Sims3 and Sims2 FanPages. I see no obtrusive ads, no pop-ups, or pop-unders. It’s all very appealing. But it does not have FTP access, for people like me who like to have a lot more control over building your WebPages.

Val's AngelFire

This site is an okay WebHost, with mild pop-unders for ads. These are not in the way, and are easy to close.

AngelFire offers both an on site control panel for your page building and upload AND FTP access for those who, like me, would prefer to maintain their sites that way.

They do have strict rules, and WILL freeze your account with absolutely NO WARNING or explanation, if you try to hot link images or files on another AngelFire site…even if you own the other AngelFire site. I know this because it has happened to Rougue and I a couple of times before we found out why.

Val's 250free.com

I am unhappy with this site, as it has a huge pop-up on it every time I open it. Very obtrusive…I plan on closing this account as soon as I find time to move all my pages hosted here.

File Sharing

If you find that you need a File Storage/Sharing service for your Creations due to limits imposed by your WebHosts, here are a handful of the services I have encountered. I have used almost all of these, and some have advantages over others. To find out if one is right for you, take a moment to explore them for yourself.

Free File Storage and Sharing

Need a place to store your ZIPs and RARs for sharing? Here are some free store and share file hosts.

1.      SkyDrive

2.      DropBox

3.      DriveHQ

4.      RipWay

5.      MediaFire

6.      Badongo

DriveHQ

This service has many benefits to it, including the convenience of syncing it with the files on your computer, if you don’t mind downloading the service software. I appreciate the pop3 email service that comes with your storage account.

MediaFire

This being one of my most recent discoveries, I have had little experience with it. It requires no software, which is a good selling point.

RipWay

This service requires a login every 30 days or your account will be closed and all uploaded files will be lost. It’s horrible when it happens, because you will have to upload all your files again and make sure all your links are fixed. So, be sure and do NOT forget to login at least 1 time every 30 days. Other than that, it’s a very reliable service.

SkyDrive

Jukia, being unhappy with the monthly login requirement imposed by RipWay, has moved her files to skydrive. She reports that other than being slow, it’s a good service. I personally use this service for backing up my Favorite Sims downloads. *smile*

DropBox

This service is always running in the background and requires a software installation to even use it. It has the convenience of syncing it with the files on your computer. I prefer to use this service for file back up rather than file sharing.

Group Sharing

If you are completely overwhelmed by the idea of building your own Sims3 FanPages or are overworked already and have little to no time to build and maintain a WebPage, then you could consider joining a Sims3 Community that will host your files for you.

Consider these…

Sims3 FanSite Groups

Would you rather share your Sims3 stuffs on a Sims3 FanSite that hosts various simmers custom content?

You can try some of these.

  1. Sims3Fanatics Community
  2. ModtheSims2
  3. CustomSims3
  4. Sims3Tinkers
  5. LianaSims3
  6. SimsFanZone

The Sims3Fanatics Community

I admit that I am biased, but this is the easiest way to share your files. All you have to do is join the group, create a folder inside the FILES section, and then upload your ZIPs/RARs. You can put PreViews in the Album.

Easy Peasy, ya!

ModTheSims2

There are a large variety of creators hosted here. I have a few items I plan on uploading here, after I finish this tutorial.

METHOD 2 Part 4:

Somewhere to Share

– Done –

In conclusion, If you have no experience building WebPages, then you should stick with using Google Sites or SnapPages for your FanPage because they both feature a built in page builder. The Google Sites also offers the file attachment feature, eliminating the File Share Service. Or…you could also consider joining a FanSite group to share your stuff. Both are acceptable ways to share your projects and are easier than building a site from scratch.

Be sure to weigh your choices wisely, considering your own abilities and the time you have to spend on maintaining your FanPages.

Once you have made your choice, you can create an account with the host of your choice, and begin adventuring into that fabulous land of web management. I may eventually write an illustrated ‘How to Build a Sims3 Fanpage’. But as for now, I need a rest and a break from the tutorial writing and thus will end this tutorial here.

In the meantime, if you are inexperienced, use Google Sites or SnapPages and follow their instructions on the control panels. This will teach you much about building your pages. You are welcome to email me with questions at valzgr8 at yahoo dot com. Be sure and put ‘Sims’, ‘Sims2’, ‘Sims3’, or ‘SimsFanatics’ in the subject line, or I may think your email is Spam and delete it without ever having read it.
